Purging Compounds Add to “Green” Manufacturing

For plastics manufacturers, the three most common and costly forms of waste are scrap resin, lost time, and wasted energy. Hence, using an effective purging compound solution will reduce all of these sources of waste and lost profits. When performed haphazardly, purging any machine can be financially and environmentally expensive.

Using straight resin to remove the unwanted material from the barrel requires a large amount of time, resin, and energy to properly clean out the machine. Therefore, using an effective commercial purging compound like those offered by Slide Products can reduce waste in all of these areas. Sure, a purging compound costs more per pound when compared to straight resin. But the secondary costs of scrap, energy, and time associated with using straight resin more than exceed the costs of an effective purging compound. And with less scrap resin headed for the landfill, the environmental advantages of using a commercial-grade purging compound are obvious as well.

Slide offers two different purging compound options. The popular and easy-to-use PDQ is a water-based purging additive. It is simply mixed with a carrier resin to create a mixture that quickly and inexpensively removes the unwanted old resin from the machine; thus minimizing lost resin, time, and energy. Slide’s heavy-duty purging compound is the NPT. This ready-to-use formulation is simply added directly to the machine with no extra resin needing to be added. NPT works by chemically destabilizing the unwanted polymer, effectively liquefying the material so that it can more easily be flushed out of the barrel. And again, the use of NPT greatly speeds up the purging process and eliminates much of the wasted resin, energy, and time.

Molding with PVC resin or using flame retardant additives simply causes nothing but headaches for most molders. These materials are widely known to emit acidic gases during the molding process. And these gases cause frustration and problems for the molder. Gases can build up on the mold surface, leading to clogged vents or filled-in mold texture. We see two ways to help solve these situations. The reactive approach is to use a cleaner to help break down and remove these gas deposits after they are formed. Slide’s Resin Remover product is an excellent option for this approach. We also offer a proactive method of trying to prevent the gas from building up on the mold surface. By using Slide’s Mold Saver Release Agent the molder can work to neutralize these corrosive and damaging acidic vapors. Not only does this formulation help with releasing the part from the mold surface, it also contains a powerful base material that will work to eliminate the acidic vapors from the mold cavity as they are being emitted from the resin. MOLD RELEASE

Mold release is most simply PAM for plastic molding.  Mold release is applied to the plastic injection mold so the part will easily fall out of the die without sticking.  If plastic parts stick to the mold and must be removed, the productivity of the machine is negatively impacted.  There are some basic questions that must be answered to select the proper Mold release;

1. What type of plastic is being used?
2. Is the part going to be painted?
3. Is the part going to be used in a food application?
4. Is the part going to be used in a medical application?
5. Does the part and molding process require frequent use of a release?

MOLD CLEANERS

Mold cleaners are used to clean the mold to prevent resin/grease build up on the mold.  Contamination on the mold can be transerred to the surface of the part causing quality issues and rework.  Mold cleaners are also used prior to storing the dies and prior to application of mold rust protection.  They are also used prior to putting a mold back into production to remove rust preventative.  Key questions to ask to choose the right mold cleaner

Tension Bolt Assemblies

Tension Fasteners systems are designed to be installed with various types of lightweight portable electric wrenches specifically intended for use with this style of structural fasteners. They can be utilized for any applications where A325 or A490 – Type I or Type III (weathering steel) hex bolts are specified. The installation tool has an inner socket which engages the spline tip of the bolt, while the outer socket engages the nut. The outer socket rotates the nut relative to the bolt spline, and when the tension is sufficient in the fastener, the spline tip simply twists-off, leaving the tightened bolt correctly installed in the connection.  

The key advantage of this type of bolt is the installation time savings by eliminating the torque and tension testing requirements of hex bolt installation.

Aerosol Flammability Explanation

One issue that we are often asked to explain is aerosol flammability. The following was taken from a white paper we published a number of years ago.

Aerosol flammability is something of a difficult and quirky subject to discuss. The easiest and most accurate statement that can be made is that the more flammable an aerosol formulation is, the greater the propensity for an issue to occur relating to a fire event. Aerosol products have their flammability rated on a zero to four scale with zero being the least flammable and four being the highest flammable rating. Products with a zero rating generally contain no flammable ingredients, while those with a four rating are required to utilize an “Extremely Flammable” warning and designation.

The flammability rating for an aerosol product is determined by a simple test named the Aerosol Flame Projection Test. This test has the spray from an aerosol directed at the base of a lit paraffin candle from a distance of 6 inches. The length of any subsequent flame extension is then measured. That extension length then determines the flammability level for that particular product. The generally accepted scale is:

• 0 – will not burn (contains no flammable ingredients)
• 1 – possible to burn (contains flammable ingredients but no flame extension)
• 2 – burns if heated (contains flammable ingredients but less than 18 inch flame extension)
• 3 – easily burns (contains flammable ingredients with a flame extension greater than 18 inches)
• 4 – very easily burns (contains flammable ingredients and flame draws back toward the aerosol can)

Only aerosol products with a flame extension greater than 18 inches long are required to be labeled as “Flammable”. And only those aerosol products that have a flame extension that moves backwards up the spray toward the aerosol can are required to be labeled as “Extremely Flammable”.

An “Extremely Flammable” aerosol product is inherently more dangerous since that flame extension has the ability to move back up toward the can and the operator spraying the product. It is conceivable that the flame could potentially move up the spray pattern and even back into the aerosol can, causing a catastrophic can failure and dangerous situation. This is true only for cans labeled as “Extremely Flammable” and having the 4 designation for flammability on the HMIS warning section of the MSDS.

One more word about flammability; any aerosol product, no matter how flammable, can safely be used as long as there is no ignition source present. But any ignition source (open flame, welding spark, static discharge, etc.) needs be to considered and properly managed when using any aerosol formulation, especially those rated as “Extremely Flammable” and having the propensity for a flame to travel backup toward the can and operator.
