- How bedbugs move – Bedbugs are wingless and move on luggage, pets, furniture, clothes, boxes, etc.
Treatment
- In treating for bedbugs, the first thing to know is you are not just treating the mattress and box spring you are treating the entire room. Nothing should be removed from the infested areas without first being treated and/or double bagged. Repeated treatments may be required.
- Housekeeping and maintenance staff – The personnel or department selected for this job should be the same team that will treat all areas when the bedbug infestations show up in the facility. Thoroughness and a detail-oriented staff are essential. Make sure the staff checks/cleans themselves – pant cuffs, socks, shoes and shoe soles before exiting the room. State E.P.A. licensing may apply.
- Linens – Linens should be double bagged (in the room) and tied shut. The textiles should be washed separately and the bags emptied directly into the washing machines (bag all trash bags, seal and dispose of to an external dumpster – do not mix infested textiles with the rest of the facility laundry. The linens should be washed on hot wash program and cycled for a period of 20 minutes minimum, longer is better (it is the heat of 120 degrees that will kill the bedbugs not the water). If possible, use bleach cycle program. Set dryer’s heat setting to high, which should kill all stages of bedbugs. If hot and bleach cycles can not be used – send infested laundry out for dry cleaning. Always check textile laundry instructions.
- Drapes – For prevention, spray in place using mist spray pattern with Dualcide P3. Spray in place, let dry, remove, double bag and check for color fastness in inconspicuous areas and follow textile washing instructions. Launder/wash on hot wash cycle (120 degrees for 20 minutes minimum) or longer. Use bleach cycle if possible. If hot and/or bleach cycles cannot be used, send out for dry cleaning.
- Vacuuming – A vacuum with both a beater bar and crevice tool with a disposable micron dirt bag will be required. The process requires a thorough vacuuming of the room including the mattress, box spring and removing all drawers and contents from any furniture in the room before the extermination process starts. All textiles should be sent for laundering. Using crevice tool, vacuum all seam areas on the mattress and box spring and on the floor. Pull all the furniture away from the walls and use crevice tool to vacuum the area where the rug meets the wall.
- Dispose of vacuum bags after every use. Double bag, seal and remove to an external dumpster. Invert vacuum and spray beater bar and crevice tool with Amrep Dualcide P3 Insect Killer. After vacuuming, spray a 2 second spray into vacuum shoe and hose with vacuum running.
- Rugs – Stream spray Amrep Dualcide P3 Insect Killer into all crevices around the room, especially at infested room entrances to prevent the insects from crawling out of the infested room. Mist spray the carpeting being thorough to cover all the areas. A Misty Fog Plus fogger may also be used in addition to the Dualcide P3 Insect Killer, but not instead of it. Make sure that perimeter areas are thoroughly sprayed including tack strips, base boards and carpet-to-floor transitions.
Prevention
Dualcide P3 remains residually effective for up to 60 days. Retreating spray applications each 30 to 45 days can provide protection from re-infestation.
